Borders

Title borrowed from Ankita Shah’s ‘Borders’

Have you ever counted ceiling tiles,
Praying by the 100th for heavy eyes,
Though I promise, few notice 4 Borders,
Easily constructed, confined, elaborate,
Most willingly bow, few try to out-run,
Millennials speak of refusing titles,
Promoting labels, checking boxes,

Doesn’t take a genius to realize,
Surrounded by fictional characters,
Depictions full of empty convictions,
Color of someone’s skin, country, borders,
Lines in the sand, drawn by White hands,
Tribes bribed, granted political power,
Bombs dropped murdering brown cousins,

… Confused?

Titles such as Brown used to classify,
Past, Present, and Future prewritten,
Educational experienced predestined,
Color, status, income, prerequisites,
Distinction, Uncle Sam enjoys conflict,
Dreaming of extinction, Muslim Holocaust,
Requesting the KKK’s assistance [again],

Have you ever counted ceiling tiles,
Praying by the 100th for heavy eyes,
Though I promise, few notice 4 Borders,
Easily constructed, confined, elaborate,
Most willingly bow, few try to out-run,
Millennials speak of refusing titles,
Promoting labels, checking boxes,

Society approves, Hollywood Blvd promotes,
Man loses count of how many sexual partners,
Called player, ladies man, role model,
Woman loses count of how many sexual partners,
Labelled hoe, slut, trick, tramp, prostitute,
Gender Roles, Oxford Dictionary, White + Male,
Positive definition, Positive adjectives awarded,

No matter what you do, it will never be enough,
PhD, white picket fence, Pig calls you ‘boy’
No matter what you do, it will never be enough,
White woman: ‘You are pretty for a Black girl’,
Unless you agree to be enslaved [again],

…Nicki, Mariah, Beyonce: shall I continue?

Have you ever counted ceiling tiles,
Praying by the 100th for heavy eyes,
Though I promise, few notice 4 Borders,
