Hypocritical ‘Liberals’ and Uneducated ‘Conservatives’: Where Did They Go Wrong

57 percent of the Democratic Party is White, 86 percent of the Republican Party is White, and 70 percent of registered voters are White. (PEW Research Center)

Charlottesville (Virginia) and the violent protests which are occurring right now are great examples of what is wrong with our political system. Not only do ‘liberals’ and ‘conservatives’ symbolize hypocritical philosophies but in the end, both represent violence, aggression, and hostility.

How can Democrats, or even liberals represent aggression? An ordinary citizen or a supporter of Black Lives Matter would state the following, ‘the Democratic Party, or those who consider themselves ‘liberal’ represent diversity’. It is true that the Democratic Party along with movements such as Black Lives Matter were organized by a diverse group of people but that doesn’t erase historical truths of the Democratic Party or ‘Liberals’.

After the Civil War, the Democratic Party in the South was the party of White Supremacy. Now, African-Americans form the party’s most loyal base of support. Coincidence?

Time and time again, both sides have met each other with violence. Trump supporters are arrogantly stupid while Bernie Sander’s supporters are blatantly hypocritical. They believe just because they use words such as ‘racism’, ‘anti-capitalist’, or ‘socialist’, that it means they automatically won or that they themselves are not discriminatory or capable of being racist.

Whether you are Muslim, White, or Gay, the idea of you stating ‘because I am liberal it means I am not racist’ is bullshit. The fact is that the Democratic Party was formed in 1792, when supporters of Thomas Jefferson began using the name Republicans, or Jeffersonian Republicans, to emphasize its anti-aristocratic policies. It adopted its present name during the Presidency of Andrew Jackson in the 1830s.

In the 1840s and ’50s, the party was in conflict over extending slavery to the Western territories. Southern Democrats insisted on protecting slavery in all the territories while many Northern Democrats resisted. The party split over the slavery issue in 1860 at its Presidential convention in Charleston, South Carolina.

Northern Democrats nominated Stephen Douglas as their candidate, and Southern Democrats adopted a pro-slavery platform and nominated John C. Breckinridge in an election campaign that would be won by Abraham Lincoln and the newly formed Republican Party. After the Civil War, most white Southerners opposed Radical Reconstruction and the Republican Party’s support of black civil and political rights.

The so-called ‘Democratic Party’ hadn’t always accepted Blacks, nor did it support giving African-Americans equal rights. They used to be identified as the “white man’s party” and demonized the Republican Party as being “Negro dominated,” even though whites were in control.

Determined to re-capture the South, Southern Democrats “redeemed” state after state — sometimes peacefully, other times by fraud and violence. By 1877, when Reconstruction was officially over, the Democratic Party controlled every Southern state. The South remained a one-party region until the Civil Rights movement began in the 1960s. Northern Democrats, most of whom had prejudicial attitudes towards blacks, offered no challenge to the discriminatory policies of the Southern Democrats.

So, as we watch protesters collide. There is no difference between an angry Trump supporter and a egotistical ‘Liberal’. Both are confused as well as uneducated. Not only has the Democratic party continuously abused minority communities, tricked them into voting for their candidates, but also has committed itself to power-hungry objectives.

If we ever want things to change. We must throw away the idea of political parties and develop a system of governance which tries to solve economic disparities instead of achieving personal agendas.
