[Historical] Depression Is An Illness Not A Choice

It is easier to reply ‘everything is alright’, than to tell the truth, ‘I am not alright’,

Fact: depression affects 14.8 million American adults in a given year,
Fact: one in 33 children and one in eight adolescents have clinical depression,
Fact: depression is the cause of over two-thirds of the 30,000 suicides each year,
Fact: for every two homicides committed in the United States, there are three suicides,

It is easier to say ‘I don’t have a problem’, than to admit ‘I have a problem’,

Spending nights breaking down a character whose only objective was to pass time,
Pretending to be one person in school, another at work, and when I am home,
Letting it all escape flooding the floor with deceit and treachery,

If only I became blind and didn’t conceptualize what resides behind everyone’s eyes,

Painfully wearing heading coverings grappling with Indigenous masks,
Not the fact one’s hair is sacred but that bruises and scars are hidden,
Foregoing baseless assumptions called weak instead of brave,

I understand…

Society is trying to ‘fix’ instead of trying to ‘understand’,
Pills meant to ease us into ‘programming’.
Memories are not supposed to be forgotten instead reflected upon and learned from,
